Where it is
Your practical driving test in Middlesbrough takes place at the test centre on Cargo Fleet Lane, Middlesbrough, TS3 8AL. If you learn with MSM, this is where your test will be, and it is where we focus your preparation.
What to bring
Turn up without these and your test will be cancelled, usually without a refund.
- Your UK provisional driving licence
- Your theory test pass certificate number
- A car that is roadworthy, taxed, insured for the test, and fitted with L plates
If you are taking your test in an MSM car, the vehicle side is handled for you. You just need your licence.
What happens on the day
Eyesight check
Before anything else the examiner asks you to read a number plate from a set distance. Fail this and the test ends there, so if you need glasses or contact lenses to drive, wear them.
Show me, tell me questions
Two vehicle safety questions. One "tell me" question answered at the start before you drive, and one "show me" question answered while driving. These cover everyday checks such as lights, brakes, tyres, and washers. Getting one wrong is a single minor fault, not a fail.
General driving
Around 40 minutes of driving on a route chosen by the examiner. They will direct you through a mix of roads and conditions and are assessing whether you drive safely and make sound decisions, not whether you drive perfectly.
Independent driving
Roughly 20 minutes where you follow either a sat nav or road signs to a destination rather than turn-by-turn instructions. Going the wrong way is not a fault. Reacting badly to going the wrong way is.
A reversing manoeuvre
You will be asked to carry out one manoeuvre. This could be parallel parking at the roadside, parking in a bay either by reversing in or driving in and reversing out, or pulling up on the right, reversing a short distance and rejoining traffic. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.
How faults work
The examiner records three kinds of fault. Driving faults, often called minors, are minor errors. You are allowed up to 15 and still pass. Serious faults are potentially dangerous. Dangerous faults involve actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property. One serious or dangerous fault means you have not passed.
Worth knowing: accumulating repeated minors in the same area can be recorded as a serious fault, because a pattern suggests a habit rather than a one-off slip.
How MSM prepares you for it
Knowing the area around a test centre matters. Our instructors teach across Middlesbrough every day and spend time with you on the kinds of roads, junctions and manoeuvre locations used around Cargo Fleet Lane, so that on test day the environment is familiar rather than a surprise.
We also do not put learners forward before they are ready. Every learner MSM has entered for a practical test has passed, and a large part of that is honest timing rather than any trick.
Booking your test
Practical tests are booked through the official GOV.UK service. You need to have passed your theory test first. Be wary of third party sites charging a premium to book on your behalf. If you are unsure when to book, ask your instructor first, since booking too early is one of the most common reasons learners end up sitting a test they were not ready for.
