Theory Test Guide

Pass marks, both sections explained, and how to prepare properly.

Why it comes first

You must pass your theory test before you are allowed to book a practical test. It is worth starting revision early rather than waiting until your driving is nearly test standard, because a theory pass that expires or a delay in booking can hold up an otherwise ready learner by weeks.

The two parts

Multiple choice

50 questions. You need 43 correct to pass. Questions cover the Highway Code, road signs, vehicle safety, and how to handle different road and weather conditions. You can flag questions and come back to them, and there is a practice session beforehand to get used to the screen.

Hazard perception

14 video clips. You need 44 out of 75 to pass. You watch clips filmed from a driver's point of view and click when you spot a developing hazard, meaning something that would cause you to change speed or direction.

Thirteen clips contain one scoreable hazard and one contains two. The earlier you spot a developing hazard, the more points you score, up to five per hazard.

One important thing to know: clicking constantly or in a rhythmic pattern to try to catch everything will score you zero on that clip. The system detects it. Click when you genuinely see something developing.

You must pass both

Both sections must be passed in the same sitting. Passing one and failing the other means retaking the whole test.

How long the pass lasts

A theory test pass certificate is valid for two years. If you have not passed your practical test within that window, you have to sit the theory again. This catches out learners who pass theory very early then have a long break from lessons, so time it sensibly.

How to prepare

Use the official DVSA revision materials rather than random free question banks, since the official ones are drawn from the actual question bank. Short regular sessions work far better than one long cram, particularly for hazard perception where you are training a reaction rather than memorising facts.

Read the Highway Code properly at least once instead of relying only on practice questions. Practice questions teach you answers. The Highway Code teaches you why, which is what actually helps on the road and in the practical test.

For hazard perception, practise with official clips so you get used to the scoring window. Many learners fail this section first time simply because they were clicking too late, or clicking on hazards that were not developing.

Booking it

Book through the official GOV.UK service. There are third party sites that charge considerably more than the official fee for the same booking, so go direct.

Once you have passed

Keep your pass certificate number safe, because you need it to book your practical test and again on test day. Then it is on to the practical, and our Middlesbrough test centre guide covers what to expect there.
